SEO in Plain English
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short, is one of the hottest topics nowadays amongst website owners. But, what is it? First of all, SEO stands for "search engine optimization." Basically, somebody like me optimizes a site to, not only be compliant with the Internet standards (geeky, boring stuff), but also friendly for the search engines. This way the search engines can come in to any website and store each of the different pages while using a complex criteria--a process called "indexing." Then, and only then, they become available to Internet users like us. Cool!
So we all can understand, imagine a 1800's librarian going door to door looking for the best articles in town. He collects them, organizes them in the way he sees fit, and then he makes them available to others to look at in an organized way. Google, for example, behaves the same way. The popular search engine comes from site to site collecting information that it thinks is good, authoritative, and popular, saves it, and makes it available to all of us in a nice, easy to read display (search engine page results). Here's when it comes the part of making the site "optimized" and "search engine friendly."
1. Optimized because the content needs to fulfill the search engines criteria; in other words, it isn't what you think is right to optimize, it is what the search engine thinks is important. So, based on that, the site is optimized using this criteria (key words, etc).
2. Search engine friendly because they are not human (Google, Yahoo!, etc). They have an algorithm (Google's algorithm is known as "the spider") that tells them what they need to look for; a process called "crawling." So, when the site is not optimized, the "spider" cannot find what it's looking for and the pages do not get indexed properly. Capicci bambino?
This is a very basic introduction of what SEO really is. There is a lot more to say, and it cannot be simply put in a few paragraphs. However, this post will give you an insight, hopefully, on why is so important to optimize a site and specially for business purposes.
Just for you to know and get excited, it is estimated that only 5% of the entire count of the websites around the world are actually fully or partially optimized!
