SEO Gone Wrong - Case 1

Written by kRemtronicz on September 21, 2009

San Diego Search Engine OptimizationA few days ago we were asked to create one of our free web analysis reports for a client. Since we are here to help everyone succeed, we jumped quickly onto our task to get the report done and emailed in a couple of days. This report, by the way, shows general yet important clues that let the client know if there's any problem (or not) with their site optimization-wise. We check URLs, images, web pages' ranking, and a few other aspects of what website optimization comprises (NOTE: Website optimization is not SEO [search engine optimization], but a branch of it instead).

Right after the client received it, he emailed us back to tell us that he had "paid for professional SEO" but he needed to confirm that a few things he paid for were done (red flag number one: why would a client verify a service?). At this point we had to mention that his website did not go through what this "company" told him they were going to do--at least not completely. However, this is just the beginning of a chain of events that helped us get the idea for this week's blog post: SEO gone wrong (actually, we should say "SEO" because that service was not even fully performed). First of all, I gotta say that clients are not responsible for choosing a company to deliver what they need them to do. I say this because he mentioned "feeling in the dark." When someone looks for service, they are usually in the dark too (in a good way). This is totally normal and should not make any client feel bad. It's like going to get your car serviced, for example: you take it, they fix it, you pay, and off you go. You don't need to know why the battery was not working right (well, you gotta ask!), or why your car needed 2 new tires when they are obviosuly bald; you simply trust the company. HOWEVER, we know many, many companies are not reputable and it is about getting the money or "making the sale" and taking advantage of people that won't question whatever they did. But, this is what today's post is about: it is important that you DO check what has been done and ask for questions, or it could cost you more later. If it's a serious company like kRemtronicz, then reports, phone calls, and explanations of everything will happen at one point or another--constantly.

Our affected client had to pay for an optimization that, to our point of view, never took place completely. It also looked like the keywords used throughout the site where simply "typed" to fill in the required information (this was even confirmed by him). Images where not optimized, and URLs were not search engine friendly (SEF); site optimization 101. To top it all off, they made the client sign for a several month contract (which entitles them to get $44 extra per month for.... who knows!), and they also charge whooping $95 for hosting! This is a true case for our section titled "SEO" Gone Wrong.

It is sad that many out there are not considered enough to, at least, complete what they charge for. What kind of world will be living in if we, companies, don't do honest, quality, fairly-priced business? Yes companies need to get paid but for well-done, completed services. Congratulations to those who in fact do help others succeed with the services they provide. To you THANK YOU!
